Hackensack’s American Legion organized “Pork in the Park” amateur rib fest attracted a crowd that left most of 10 contestants out of ribs before 2 p.m. even though the event continued on until 5 p.m.

Based on tickets exchanged for rib samples, organizers estimated an attendance of around 700 people. The total amount of money raised is not yet available, but last year’s event raised enough for three $500 scholarships after expenses. Organizers hoped to match, and possibly beat that amount this year. Money for the event comes from contest entrance fees and a $1 per rib price tag.

This year brought a slight change to the event, which has now been running three years. In the past, contestants were allowed to grill pork butt and chicken as well as ribs. Rules this year restricted contestants to just ribs.

Teams paid a registration fee. Many of which offset the cost with the help of business sponsorships.

Pork in the park winners were:

•First Place: FN BBQ, $500

•Second Place: BS Northwoods Rib Kings, $250

•Third Place: Grill ‘em All, $150

•People’s Choice: 96 BBQ, $100
