Kids' Summer Reading Program to start May 30
The Pequot Lakes Library will start the summer with the opening of “Dig into Reading,” the 2013 Kids’ Summer Reading Program.
It will run through Aug. 6 and includes children in preschool through sixth grade. A responsible adult should take the kids to the library Thursday, May 30, from 5:30-7 p.m. or Saturday, June 1, from 9-11:30 a.m. to sign up. Signup may also be done at the library after June 1.
This year there will be a $5 signup fee per family. If the kids finish the required reading, the $5 fee will be returned to them at the final party so that they may buy a book.
When the kids sign up, they will also plant a seed. When they come in to check out books during the summer, the kids will be able to water their plants and see how they’ve grown. The plants may be taken home after the final party.
There are several presentations planned during the summer. Any child may attend the presentations even if not signed up for the reading program. The dates and times for these presentations, which will all take place at the library, are listed here:
Tuesday, June 11, 1-2 p.m., a naturalist from Deep Portage will give a program on insects; Tuesday, June 18, 6:30 p.m., a Legacy Program featuring children’s book author Patrick Mader; Tuesday, July 9, 1-2 p.m., a naturalist from Deep Portage will give a program on birds; Wednesday, July 17, 10 a.m., Monkey Mind Yoga Party; Monday, July 22, 10:30-11:30 a.m., dinosaurs, dinosaurs, dinosaurs; Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2:30-3:15 p.m., magician-professor Marvel’s Amazing Archaeological Adventure.
Tuesday, Aug. 6, is the day kids must hand in their reading lists. Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 1-2 p.m. is the date for the final ice cream and book party.
