Greg Trooper to perform May 3 in Nisswa

Evocative songwriter Greg Trooper makes his Grassroots Concerts debut at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Live Well Night Club and Coffee Bar, Nisswa.

Trooper is a songwriter’s songwriter. His songs have been recorded by numerous artists, including Vince Gill, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Robert Earl Keen, Maura O’Connell, Lucy Kaplansky and Tom Russell.

Raised in the shore town of Little Silver, N.J., he became enthralled by the greater New York area’s rich music scene. His musical creations are influenced by what could be termed a musical holy trinity in the work of Otis Redding, Hank Williams and Bob Dylan with their guiding lights of passion, literary dexterity and plainspoken honesty. It’s one reason Trooper’s music feels equally informed by Memphis soul, Greenwich Village folk and Nashville twang.

Trooper has released 11 albums since 1986, with a 12th recording soon to be released. It will be his first since “Upside-Down Town” in 2011.

Admission is $10 at the door for adults and $5 for children under 12 with listening attention, when accompanied by an adult. At all shows, seating is first-come, first-served. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

This is the last concert of the spring season and will be No. 276 since the venue was created in 1988.

The Live Well Nightclub and Coffee Bar, 5459 County Road 18, is next to Nisswa School.

Grassroots Concerts are made possible in part by a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council through the Minnesota State Legislature. The series is a 501c(3) non-profit under the Internal Revenue Code.

At each concert volunteers welcome your donations of non-perishable food or cash, which they deliver to the local food shelf.
