Lakes Area Music Festival to announce season at March 17 event

The Lakes Area Music Festival will announce its 2013 season at a mid-winter concert Sunday, March 17, at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa.

The free 2 p.m. event will feature festival artistic director and cellist Scott Lykins, with Jonathan Magness on violin and Sam Bergman, viola.

News about the 2013 season including dates, events and a preview of returning performers will be shared as well.

All three upcoming concert performers are well-known Lakes Area Music Festival veterans.

Magness, associate principal second violinist with the Minnesota Orchestra, has been featured as soloist under Marin Alsop, in addition to solo performances for Inside the Classics and Young People’s Concerts. He began his studies at the University of Minnesota, earned a bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School and a master’s from the University of Graz in Austria. He teaches violin at the University of Minnesota’s Bravo Institute.

Bergman has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 2000 and made his debut with the Lakes Area Music Festival last season. He serves as host and writer for the Minnesota Orchestra’s Inside the Classics concert series. As a soloist and chamber musician, Bergman has commissioned and premiered new works by several young composers, has served as a visiting faculty member at St. Olaf College and teaches chamber music at Greenwood Music Camp in rural Massachusetts.

Founder of the music festival, Lykins began studying piano and cello at a young age. He attended DePaul University before transferring to the Eastman School of Music, where he received his master’s degree. He has participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival, National Orchestra Institute, National Repertory Orchestra and the Summer Music Festival at Colorado College. Lykins has also served as principal cellist of the Classical Symphony of Chicago and the Eastman Philharmonia, and has played with the Syracuse Symphony and the New World Symphony in Miami.

Each summer, the Lakes Area Music Festival features an eclectic blend of masterpieces for chamber, orchestral and vocal repertoires. More than 80 guest artists selected for their passion and talent stage the July through August performances.
