Tigers improve to 5-0 overall

The Pine River-Backus Tigers football team remained unbeaten with a 43-7 win over the host Bagley Flyers in North Star Conference action on Friday, Sept. 27.

The Tigers, 5-0 overall, put their undefeated record on the line against the visiting Frazee Hornets at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. Last fall, PR-B won its first four games before losing at Frazee. The Hornets did fall to 3-2 overall after losing to Red Lake County 20-14 on Sept. 27.

Against Bagley, the Tigers jumped out early as Travon Pederson scored his first of three touchdowns on the night as he crossed the goal line from six yards out. Jared Adkins then added the two-point conversion to make it 7-0. Adkins added a 10-yard touchdown run with 2:45 to go in the first quarter to give the visitors a 14-0 lead.

Justin Olson hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Loiland with 6:05 to go before halftime to cut the Tiger lead to 14-7.

The Tigers continued to pound the ball at the heart of the Flyers’ defense, and the result was an 11-yard touchdown run by Henry Krecklau with 1:24 remaining in the half. Triston Rubner added the conversion run to make it 22-7 at intermission.

Pederson scampered into the end zone from five yards out with 7:26 left in the third quarter to put the Tigers ahead 28-7. Pederson then added his third score on a 50-yard scamper with 2:07 left in the third period. Pederson also added the two-point conversion to make it 36-7.

Krecklau notched the final score of the night as he raced in from 16 yards out. Hank Raph added the extra-point kick to make it 43-7.

“We played a strong game physically,” PR-B coach Tom Demars said. “We put some licks on them that they had a tough time getting up from. We had four running backs who shared carries, and also blocked for each other.”
