Street in front of Nisswa School renamed

Email News Alerts

Nisswa Elementary School students got a taste of democracy when they helped name the street that runs past their school.

The portion of County Road 18 that will be turned back to the city this fall after that realigned road construction is complete will be called Lakers Lane.

The name change will affect that part of the road from the new intersection of County State Aid Highway 18 and the old 18 east of Greenwood Cemetery to Main Street/old 18.

Residents who live along the road will maintain their E911 number; the street name will simply change.

All students were able to suggest a street name and teachers narrowed the submissions to three names. All students, teachers and staff then cast votes for their favorite name. Several students submitted Lakers Lane.

The council on June 19 approved the new name — Lakers Lane — which received 141 votes. Nisswa School’s nickname is the Lakers and the school emphasizes Lakers’ Pride.

The other top two names were Lakers Pride Lane, 53 votes; and Webster Hill Road, 47 votes.

Many students and their parents attended the June 19 city council meeting for the council’s vote.

In other street name business June 19, the council debated a request from Grand View Lodge to change the name of County Road 77 to Interlachen Road.

City planner Loren Wickham said Grand View contends there is confusion when people travel to the resort and turn on lower County Road 77/Pine Beach Road north of Baxter. Guests then complain that they took the long way around Gull Lake to get to Grand View.

The resort would like to tell people to turn on Interlachen Road to reach the resort.

County Road 77 loops around the south, west and north sides of Gull Lake. It is also called Pine Beach Road on the south through East Gull Lake and Interlachen Road on the north through Lake Shore.

While the planning commission recommended the council make the name change, the council had questions and didn’t take any action.
