Road Crew wrestlers beat Blackduck
The visiting Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew registered seven pins in defeating Blackduck 52-22 in a non-conference meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Road Crew dominated the Drakes by winning the first eight matches. Blackduck then won the next four matches before the Road Crew captured the final two weights.
The Road Crew’s Anthony Philipson started the match with a 5-0 win after two takedowns and an escape. Spencer Richards then had a quick takedown and worked it into a pin at 1:41.
“I knew that if we would win in the lower weights then we would do all right,” said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth, whose team built a 40-0 lead after eight matches. “To get behind going into the upper weights would not be good.”
Brandon Mager dominated with takedowns for an 8-3 decision at 130. Getting a takedown and three near-fall points in the first period Nat Adkins (126) then got his pin 24 seconds into the second period. Triston Rubner went in for a quick takedown then got his pin at 1:06.
Jace Loge dominated his contest with a takedown, two reversals and six near fall points before getting his pin. Nick Gravdahl had two takedowns before getting his opponent on his back for a pin in the 145 match. Drey Loge, rated No. 4 in the state, was productive in every period to win 12-0.
Ozzy Miller then came back in the third period with an escape and a takedown, but it was too late as he lost 12-3. The Road crew lost the next three matches, but Kurt Kent came back with seven seconds remaining in the second period and pinned his opponent in the 220 match. Jared Adkins needed just 50 seconds to win by fall.
“Bradon Mager did an outstanding job,” Hoffarth said. “I knew then that we were in good shape. The lower weights took the pressure off the upper weights. Our wrestlers took the hometown crowd out of the picture. I was very happy by the way they wrestled.”
The Road Crew, 10-1 overall, is scheduled to compete at Osakis on Thursday, Jan. 17.
