Road Crew improves to 14-1

Jared Adkins earned his 75th career win on a pin at 285 pounds as the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew defeated Sauk Centre/Melrose 57-13 and Dassel-Cokato 39-25 in wrestling dual meets on Friday, Jan. 17.

Adkins, Isaac Manthei (113), Spencer Richards (120), Nick Gravdahl (152), Justin Mackenthun (182) and Cadel Roeder (220) all won twice for the Road Crew, who improved to 14-1 overall.

The Road Crew was scheduled to wrestle at Perham on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and then wrestle at the Mid-State Conference tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Staples.

“In the last three duals we have only given up one pin,” said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth. “The team is starting to believe. Dassel-Cokato wrestles a tough schedule so we knew we had to wrestle well. It is good to see teams from the central part of the state. They seem to fill up their lineup better than northern teams. It came down to the big boys (top weights) against Dassel-Cokato.”

Against Sauk Center/Melrose, Darian Anderson lost the first match 9-3 and Manthei had a takedown to win 2-0. Richards won by fall at 3:15 while Brandon Mager (126) pinned his opponent at 1:15. Evan Gravdahl then fought off getting pinned, but still lost 14-0.

Devyn Richards lost a 4-2 decision, and Dillon Nichols got the first takedown and received near-fall points in the first period then pinned his opponent at 3:04. Nick Gravdahl won by forfeit.

Jonah Lelwica (160) went the distance but lost 9-5. After Joe Harrison won by forfeit, Justin Mackenthun was reversed, but came back with his own reversal and a pin at 3:43. Chris Foster trailed 5-2 going into the second period. Foster then had a reversal and won by fall at 3:45. Cadel Roeder dominated then got his pin at 2:57, and Adkins by forfeit.

Against D-C, Anderson earned a penalty point and an escape to win 6-4. Isaac Manthei usually wrestles on junior varsity, but he seemed a home with a takedown and near-fall points to win 4-0.

Richards needed just 51 seconds to pin his opponent, and Mager wrestled a ranked Tom Keskey and lost 12-0. Evan Gravdahl lost 13-0 and Dallin Sonenstahl lost 16-1. Dillon Nichols lost 8-3, but Nick Gravdahl pinned his opponent at 2:40. Harrison lost 5-0 and the Road Crew was behind 19-18.

Ozzy Miller had a pin at 59 seconds, and Mackenthun was ahead 4-3 going into the second period when he won by fall at 2:36. Chris Foster (195) was pinned, but the Road Crew led 30-25.

Cadel Roeder (220) was behind 4-1 after one period. He had a 6-5 lead after the second period, but stepped up in the third period with two takedowns and three near-fall points to win 13-7. Adkins earned his 75th win with a pin at 2:35.

“Cadel had the biggest victory of his career,” Hoffarth said.

Road Crew 39, UNC 20

With an experienced, well- balanced team, and coached by high school state champion Jacob Oyster, the United North Central Warriors fell to the Road Crew on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Pequot Lakes Athletic Center.

The Warriors, with two state ranked wrestlers, met the Road Crew on Parents night. It was also a milestone match as Philipson won his 125th career match and Mackenthun won his 60th match.Anderson lost 5-2 and Philipson was ahead 15-0 before he got his pin at 4:37, and Richards lost 11-4.

Mager got the first takedown then put on a tight cradle for a pin at 1:42. Dallin Sonenstahl put up a good fight, but lost 16-6h Evan Gravdahl was ahead 5-4 after the first period, but ended up on the losing 15-6, and the Road Crew were trailing 14-12. Devyn Richards got the first takedown and won 2-0, and Nick Gravdahl defeated Sam Tellers with a third-period escape for a 1-0 win.

Harrison got a quick takedown and a pin at 1:11, and Miller was tied 6-6 going into the third period. Miller eventually lost 11-7.

Mackenthun was moved up and wrestled a ranked Tristan Palmer, who led 1-0 going into the third period. Mackenthun escaped then got a takedown only to be countered by Palmer’s escape, but it was too late and Mackenthun won his 60th match 3-2. Roeder won by forfeit, and Adkins lost 4-0 against a ranked wrestler in Taylor Carlson.

Road Crew 45, CL-Bena 27

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Road Crew won three of their final four matches to defeat Black Duck/Cass Lake-Bena in a non-conference match.

Miller, Mackenthun Philipson, Richards, Evan Gravdahl and Johan Lelwica all won by pin.

Philipson tied the match 6-6 when he pinned David Foster in 4:52, and then Richards followed with a pin in 55 seconds. Mager dropped an 11-2 decision and then Sonenstahl was pinned in 3:46. Evan Gravdahl then pinned Mason Preston in 2:44, but Nichols dropped a 5-0 decision at 145.

Lelwica then pinned Damon Staples in 1:44 and Nick Gravdahl earned a 7-2 decision over Nathan Jadlownski. Daven Staples won a 15-5 decision over Harrison, but the Road Crew rallied as Miller had a pin in 1:02 and Mackenthun pinned Cooper Jedlica in 5:55. Roeder was then edged 12-2, but Adkins won by forfeit to end the match.
