PL softball teams finish seasons
The Pequot Lakes' 16-under fast-pitch softball team closed out their summer season by winning five of six games to finishes 9-4 overall.
In their final home action on Wednesday, July 16, Pequot Lakes pitcher Taya Salminen threw a pair of one-hit shutouts in beating Brainerd 3-0 and 2-0.
Pequot Lakes managed just two hits in the opener. One was an RBI triple by Haley Wiebolt and the other was by Alex Kotaska.
In the nightcap, Salminen again pitched well while teammate Jessica Faacks had two hits and scored twice, Kotaska was 2-2, Lexi Danielson doubled, and Maddy Galligan and Laura Squires each had one hit.
Pequot Lakes split a doubleheader at Sebeka on Thursday, July 17. They won the opener 22-3 as Salminen allowed just three hits while walking three. Faacks had two hits, including an inside-the-park homer, while driving in four runs and scoring four times; Barb Miller was 3-3 with four runs scored; Squires had two hits and scored twice; Galligan drilled her first home over the fence, a three-run blast; Kotaska was 2-2 with four RBI; and Karlie Trottier scored three runs.
In the second game, Pequot Lakes led 2-0 into the fifth inning before falling behind 3-2 and eventually losing 5-4. Squires had two RBI, Faacks was 2-3 and Miller, Meghan Nelson and Kotaska each had hits.
Pequot Lakes finished the season on Wednesday, July 23, by sweeping at Pillager 15-5 and 7-5. They took advantage of 22 walks and two hit batters. Salminen allowed four hits in the opener while Bre Sewall walked eight, but struck out seven in four innings to win the nightcap.
In the opener, Faacks was 2-3 with two RBI, and Wielbolt and Danielson each drove in two runs.
In the second game, Danielson was 2-2 while Galligan doubled and drove in a run.
"Bre (Sewell) pitched a nice game, and mixed up her pitches to get strikeouts," said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent. "I think our young pitchers (Salminen and Sewall) did well this summer, and Faacks really hit the ball well in the second half. It was also nice to see Maddy (Galligan) hit her first home run."
14-under teams at state
The Pequot Lakes Red and Blue 14-under girls' fast-pitch softball team both finished 0-2 at the Class D state tournament on Saturday, July 26, in Buffalo.
The Blue team lost to Brownton 7-6 and Park Rapids 6-5 while the Red team lost to Howard Lake/Waverly 11-2 and Barnesville 20-4.
"We were in both games, but we made some costly errors and didn't get the big hits when we needed them," said Blue coach Chad Rudbeck.
"We didn't hit well with just two hits in the first game and four in the second game," said Red coach Bret Sergent. "Both of the teams that we played were pretty good."
In the loss to Brownton, the Blue team's Chloe Deutsch had two RBI while Hope Anderson, McKenzie Nelson and Deutsch each had a hit. Against Park Rapids, Anderson was 2-2 while Deutsch had two hits and four RBI, and Cassandra Haman had a hit.
"We had the tying run on base (against Park Rapids) but we couldn't get another hit," Rudbeck said.
Sewell pitched both games for the Red team. In the opener, Alex Kotaska and Emma Benson each had one hit for Pequot Lakes. Against Barnesville, Maggie Miska and Maddy Morrison each had a hit and two RBI while Kaya Danielson and Trottier also had a hit.
