Pine River youth attends Language Village Immersion Program
Lauren Penkhus of Pine River participated in the Concordia Language Villages' Immersion Program by attending a one-week youth exploration session at Lac du Bois, the French Language Village, near Bemidji.
Penkhus is the daughter of Todd Penkhus and Tammy Smith, and will be a fifth-grader at Pine River-Backus Elementary School.
By attending the French Language Village, Penkhus experienced a simulated visit to another country. She was issued a passport, exchanged currency and adopted a new name.
By interacting with staff from all over the world, Penkhus learned about the many opportunities available to those who speak more than one language. She was immersed in the language and culture of another country through large and small learning groups, authentic foods, holiday celebrations, re-enactments of historic events, songs, dances, crafts, games and everyday conversations.
