The team performed “The Flying Doctor,” a comedy by Moliere, a French playwright from the 17th century.

Director Gary Hirsch said the act is accompanied by a beautiful set by Tim Leagjeld.

On Jan. 25, Hirsch’s team had to perform first, which Hirsch said is the absolute worst position. Hirsch, who’s directed one-act teams for 25 years, said he’s never seen a team that performed first move on to the next level of competition.

He told the team members they would have to wow the judges so they weren’t forgotten after the other performances, and they did.

“They were so strong,” Hirsch said of 11 actors and two techies who make up the team. “It was the best show we’ve done to date, and the judges recognized that.”

This Saturday, Feb. 1, the next level of competition, sectional performances, will be held in the Pequot Lakes High School auditorium. The competition includes any teams that took first or second place at subsection competitions.

Performances on Feb. 1 begin at 9 a.m. and are open to the public; however, audience members must arrive early as the doors are locked when performances begin. Eight teams will perform, with the Pequot Lakes team performing last at 3:30 p.m. There’s no charge to attend performances.

Hirsch said the competition will be stepped up at sectionals, where the best teams, including the team that beat Pequot Lakes at subsection competition, will perform. If Pequot Lakes takes first place, it will compete in the statewide competition.
