Pequot Lakes 16-under team splits
The Pequot Lakes 16-under summer fast-pitch softball team split a home doubleheader with the International Falls 18-under squad on Wednesday, July 10. Pequot Lakes won 12-11 after trailing by 10 runs early in the game. International Falls then won the nightcap 2-0.
In the opener, the visitors scored three times in the first, added two more in the second and six more in the fourth for an 11-1 lead. Pequot Lakes' only run had come on a triple by Haley Wiebolt and a single by Maddy Galligan. The host team rallied with five runs in the fifth and then another five runs in the seventh, sparked by RBI two-out singles by Galligan, Meghan Nelson and Caitlin Carkhuff, to send the game into extra innings.
Pequot Lakes won in the eighth as Wiebolt reached on a bunt single, and was eventually bunted over to third base. Laura Squires then drilled a walkoff single to score Wiebolt.
Wiebolt and Squires were each 3-5 while Galligan, Carkhuff and Taya Salminen each had two hits. Reliever Bre Sewall, who pitched the final four shutout innings, earned the win.
"Bre really pitched well," Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent said. "And we hit the ball well."
Sewall pitched the first three innings of the second game, which only went five innings. International Falls won with single runs in the first and third innings. Salminen pitched the final two scoreless innings.
"We had some good defensive plays in the second game," said Sergent, whose squad is 4-3 overall. "We turned a double play, Barb Miller (center fielder) threw out a runner at home plate and Meghan Nelson made a nice diving catch in left field."
Pequot Lakes' 14-under has two softball teams. The Red team is 6-2 overall while the Blue squad is 2-5-1.
"We have 24 girls out for summer softball, and they're all seeing a lot of playing time and improving," Sergent said.
