Joseph Byron Copley, age 88 of Brainerd died Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Essentia St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd.
Joseph was born June 3, 1926 in Aitkin, Minnesota the son of Joseph and June (Sherrick) Copley. He grew up and attended schools in Wealthwood. He received his G.E.D. at the age of 50. He joined the U.S. Navy and served during WW II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Upon his discharge he returned to the Aitkin area and married Gloria Jean Swanson on June 5, 1948 at the Glory Baptist Church. They lived in Boulder, Colorado for a year and then moved to the Twin Cities where Joseph worked for Northwest Airlines until his retirement in 1989. He and Gloria then moved to Brainerd where they have resided since. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Brainerd. He enjoyed Beekeeping, woodworking and making maple syrup. He had built 3 homes in his younger days. Joseph was steadfast and faithful in his relationship with the Lord and his wife.
He is survived by his loving wife Gloria Copley of Brainerd; Children and spouses: Byron (Janne) Copley of Leadville, Colorado; Kathleen (Lawrence) Oberg of Orr, Mn.; Timothy (Becka) Copley of Brainerd; Jonathan Lee Copley of Poulsbo, Washington; 12 grandchildren; several Great Grandchildren; sisters: Frances Henderson of Brainerd; Jessie Hollingsworth of Aitkin; Margaret Copley of Aitkin; Laura Luoma of Grand Rapids, Mn.; Carrie Ahrendt of Seabeck, Washington; and brother: Roland Copley of Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son Steven Jerome Copley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:30 AM at Faith Baptist Church in Brainerd with Pastor Max Day officiating. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11:30 AM services at the church. Burial will be in the Glory Cemetery near Aitkin. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
