Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion seeks $60,000 in donations
The Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion Post 500 has begun a fundraiser to raise $60,000 to complete major renovations and much needed replacement of equipment.
The building is more than 35 years old and some of the kitchen systems/design does not meet Minnesota Health Department requirements.
The Legion is asking its membership and others in the community who enjoy coming to the Legion for help in these fundraising efforts.
Deanna Dubel, Auxiliary president, said that in addition to updating the kitchen to meet health department codes, new flooring, carpeting, water heaters, insulation/ventilation and a new furnace are needed.
"There have not been any major renovations in the building in the past; things were just 'fixed.' But now they are worn out and cannot be repaired any longer," said Dubel, who is spearheading the fundraising effort.
Enough funds have been raised to date to pay for and complete installation of the new insulation and roof ventilation. Replacement of other equipment and worn items will occur as the funds are raised. The goal is to finish all project by year-end, or sooner, if possible.
The main objective, Dubel said, is "to keep supporting our veterans through the Legion-sponsored programs, to keep growing the membership and to continue to provide a place for veterans and the community to gather. It especially important now to show our veterans that we care, in light of the current issues with the VA hospitals."
The facility hosts many community events, such as card games, bingo, St. Patrick's Day and St. Urho Day events, pancake breakfasts, weddings and funerals. The Legion hosts an annual flea market, Santa breakfast, Poppy Days and several bake sales to raise funds for veterans, send care packages to troops serving overseas, sponsor sending students to Girl's State and Boy's State each year, and provide scholarships to local students graduating from high school.
Other activities include the Color Guard performing at funerals and local parades, and at Memorial Day services.
Donations from those who support the Legion's veteran-focused activities, or who come to the Legion to enjoy these events and meals, would be welcome.
The Fundraising Committee is asking each of the more than 400 Legion and Auxiliary members to donate $100 each to the cause. Some may not be able to give that much, but others have donated more already.
The committee has raised more than $8,000 so far. The Legion is raffling two kayaks to raise funds.
Once the fundraising is completed, those who make contributions will be honored with a plaque. To make a tax-deductible donation, make checks payable to the Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion Post 500 Remodeling Fund. Checks can be dropped off at the Legion or mailed to PO Box 362, Crosslake, MN 56442.
