Celebration of life for Serina Macias planned Aug. 23
The Pine River-Backus School lost another student Aug. 16 when 16 year old Serina Macias passed away.
According to information provided by Macias' brother Gabriel Frausto, Macias had developed abdominal pains over the course of a week. The pains were mistaken for a minor illness until they suddenly worsened. Macias was transported to a hospital by ambulance where she underwent surgery.
It was discovered in surgery that Macias' intestine had twisted and perforated, causing bacterial infection. By the time the infection was discovered, it was extensive. Macias had a small chance of recovery, but she passed away Aug. 16.
Macias was a well known student at the Pine River-Backus School and known by some as Button. Pine River-Backus High School Principal Trent Langemo said that school services are available for students who would like to talk.
Macias' family is holding a celebration of her life on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Pine River Dam starting at 11 a.m. The family is welcoming donations to help with costs. Donations can be made at the Pine River State Bank, speak to Deb Hopkins at the Pine River State Bank for more details.
