Backus Cornfest events feature memorial balloon launch

The annual Backus Cornfest is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9. This year's theme is "Colonel Cobber Goes Pop." Festivities will include a memorial balloon launch for event organizer Michael Martin, who recently died.

The Backus American Legion and Auxiliary will sponsor several events Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8 and 9, in conjunction with the event.

Friday, Aug. 8

5:30 p.m.: Meat raffle at the Legion.

7:30 p.m.: Bingo at the Legion.

Saturday, Aug. 9

8 a.m.-4 p.m.: Craft and flea market.

10 a.m.: Jim Hamilton Chainsaw Carving event on Front Street.

10 a.m.: Lakeside Baptist corn eating contest registration.

11 a.m.: Parade, followed by balloon launch in memory of Michael Martin; cost is $1 per balloon.

Noon: Lunch at Backus Fire Hall featuring corn on the cob, pulled pork, buns, wild rice hotdish, potato salad, watermelon and beverage for a freewill donation.

12:30 p.m.: Kids games on Front Street. Tickets may be purchased before and after the parade.

1 p.m.: Lakeside Baptist corn eating contest.

1:30 p.m.: Money scramble.

2 p.m.: Cake walk.

2 p.m.: Horseshoe tournament at the Legion. Sign-up starts at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $10. There will be a drawing for partners with a 100 percent payout.

2 p.m.: Bean bag tournament at the Legion. Sign-up until tournament time. Entry fee is $10 per two-person team. Cash prizes will be awarded for first through third places with 100 percent payout.

6 p.m.-midnight: Street dance with live music by Brendan Flynn and headliner Fish Don't Blink.

9 p.m.: Free customer and cash drawings at the Legion.

Dusk: Fireworks.

This year's beer garden is sponsored by Willards Saloon & Eatery. Minors within the beer garden must be accompanied by a parent and cannot remain within the fenced off area beyond 10 p.m.
